Things To Know Before Breeding Your Cat

Before you ever consider breeding, you must first pick the right breed for your family. The population of cats is the United States alone is unbelievable. About all experts will tell you that you should spay your cat rather than breed it. Regardless what experts have to say, several people prefer to have a litter of kittens from their cat. Before you decide to breed your cat, there are a some things that you should think about.

The first thing you should know is that breeding cats takes time. For the next two months after the litter is born, you’ll require to clean the area on a regular basis. You’ll also require to observe the kittens as well, and keep a close eye on how they’re developing. If you plan to breed a litter of cats, you won’t have time for much of anything else.

Breeding cats will also need a good degree of space as well. If you’ve a small flat, you shouldn’t attempt to breed a cat. You should also be sure that your family agrees with the idea, as it isn’t good for the kittens if you keep them locked up. Keep in mind that kittens like to see things; they’ll end up going all over your house as well.

Breeding cats also needs a degree of responsibility as well. You should always have a plan of approach, including homes for the kittens to go that you aren’t planning to keep. Keep in mind that things may change, somebody who wanted a cat may change his mind once the litter is born. In this event, you must decide whether or not you may keep a kitten that doesn’t have a house.

Breeding also needs a few education as well. You should be prepared for any troubles along the way, as well as what takes place during birth. From cutting umbilical cords to delivering early, you’ll require to be well prepared. You should also have the suitable supplies, and know how to handle things in the event of a c-section. You’ll also require to know what to feed pregnant cats, as their diets are very important if you’re breeding.

Breeding will also price money as well, with kittens costing some more money than you may think. The food isn’t the only thing that’s costly, as the vet bills can also get unaffordable. Even though you may go through the entire pregnancy without going to the vet, you’ll still require de-worming and inoculation medicines as well.

In brief, there’s more to think about where breeding is concerned. If you’ve your mind set on it and you would like to breed, you should make sure that you’ve the proper knowledge and everything you need before hand. You should always be ready to handle anything associated with breeding – and prepare yourself for the worst possible scenario.

For those in the know, the initials CFA are very important when they are looking for a cat. The initials CFA represent the Cat Fancier’s Association. For cats to be proclaimed as a pedigree, they must be certified by CFA. CFA is the largest association for the registry of purebred felines and only forty one breeds of felines are certified by them.

This association came into existence in order to maintain breed standards and to register kittens from pedigree cats. The CFA pays close attention to the breeds to maintain the standards of the cats, checking that the cats comply with the standard specific traits when showcasing them at the annual cat shows.

In order to better the breed characteristics, a breeder must register a litter of purebred kittens with the Cat Fancier’s Association. At this time, it is the breeder’s decision as to whether these kittens will be allowed to breed or not. The only method to ensure that future descendants of the cat are able to be registered, is to get a pin number for the cat’s application form. New owners should note that they would have to personally register the kittens of this particular cat, as their pets after this registration.

There are three specific categories into which each breed is placed by the Cat Fancier’s Association; they are the Championship Class, Provisional Class and the Miscellaneous Class. Each of the forty one cat breeds the CFA recognizes must fall into one of these three categories. For purposes of showing the cats, the breed must win the first place title of its particular class in order to be judged for the title of Best in Show.

Breeds that are only beginning to be acknowledge and are undergoing further scrutiny to ascertain that they comply with the new benchmarks are grouped under the Provisional Class while pedigree breeds that already have approved and long historical backgrounds are grouped under the Championship Class. Cats which are still being developed and bred for a band of standard traits and characteristics, are grouped under the Miscellaneous Class. However, being placed in in this class cannot be eligible or be in the running for the title of Best in Show.

The CFA is not the only cat registry in the world. In Canada, cat owners may register their purebred felines with the Canadian Cat Association. This association was established by native Canadians who wanted to register their purebred breeds with an association in their own country.

Another cat registry found around the world is The Traditional Cat Association. This registry doesn’t take into consideration the popular fads in traits and will stick to the original specifications of the breed stringently. There are other registries which are the Fédération Internationale Féline, the association for cats in Europe and the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy, a registry in United Kingdom.

With the variety of feline breeds being many, they all share one commonality; they are all considered either long hair or short hair. Common breeds found in the shorthair classification include Abyssinian and the British Shorthair. For the long hair classification, breeds such as the Norwegian Forest Cats and Turkish Angoras are represented.

The most commonly known breed of cat of the forty one recognized by the Cat Fancier’s Association is the American Shorthair. This particularly popular breed has been in the United States for over three hundred years. With the everyday cat resembling this particular breed, the American Shorthair has been carefully developed over many generations to ensure that all kittens display specific characteristics. In addition to the American Shorthair, other popular breeds include Siamese, Rex, Main Coon, Persian and the Ragdoll.

All cats can be affectionate and make sweet companions even if they are not pedigreed cats. If you wish to experience the thrill of showing your cat, and are looking for a certain display of characteristics, then a pedigreed cat is the perfect choice for you.

In 1966 in Canada, a Domestic Shorthair gave birth to a liter of kittens with a naturally occurring mutation of hairlessness.

This liter became the ancestors of today’s Sphynx, created through inbreeding and crossbreeding over time. Interestingly, the same genetic mutation that causes hairlessness in a Sphynx is the same mutation that causes the curly and sometimes nearly absent coat in a Devon Rex. Oftentimes, a Devon Rex is inbred to strengthen the gene pool of the Sphynx. A Sphynx, sometimes referred to as a Canadian Hairless, is not always totally hairless; many have a fine downy coating. However, a Sphynx is the color of his skin, not his ‘fur’. Contrary to popular belief, a Sphynx is not a truly hypoallergenic cat, particularly if he has a peach fuzz coating.

All Sphynx will still produce some amount of dander, the usual culprit for causing allergic reactions. However, most people with cat allergies find they are able to tolerate a Sphynx. This breed of cat is very hearty and healthy, despite its almost sickly appearance. They are muscular and slightly larger than the average cat, but do require special care due to their lack of a coat.

A Sphynx will become colder more easily than the average cat and requires the occasional bath, as they have no hair to absorb naturally occurring oils in the skin. They are also more prone to sunburn and heatstroke since they lack a protective covering. A Sphynx is a very patient and adaptable cat, making them an excellent choice for apartment dwellers and those with children or other pets. They are loyal to their families and enjoy their attention and company, which includes playing with them.

Thanks to a careful breeding program, the Sphynx breed does not suffer from any major medical concerns beyond normal health care.

There is a website that has great information on Sphynx and most other breeds of cats. It has details that pertain to a cat breeds health, grooming, living conditions, best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:
